Was StalkDaily A Phishing Operation? Either Way, I’m Locked Out Of Twitter. (UPDATED)
UPDATE: The solution is to send go to Twitter.com and request a password change. I was back in immediately after doing this.
It can take a while to filter through to external clients (like TweetDeck). Thanks for everybody’s help!
Earlier today Twitter was hit by StalkDaily, a website that infected any Twitter visitor with a hack that made your account auto-tweet recommendations. Click here to read more, and to find out if you were infected.
I posted my suggested cure, which involved changing your password, which I did, to this website at 1.28pm GMT. It got re-tweeted well and generated a bit of interest.
I went to the cinema at 3pm, and when I came out, I could no longer login to my Twitter account.
My profile is still there, so I’ve not been suspended by mistake or anything else, so it’s not that. But when I got home and tried to login again, I finally got to see the problem: I’ve been locked out.
Twitter has ‘temporarily locked your account after too many failed attempts to sign in’.
Now, it’s true that after the first time I couldn’t access Twitter on my phone I tried several times to get back in (using several different clients, as well as Twitter.com), so I clocked up a few of those re-tries myself. But I was locked out the very first time, too, which got me thinking: was StalkDaily just one big phishing operation?
Either way, I can’t access my account. Twitter has told me to ‘chillax’, but that’s easier said than done when you have no idea when the lock will be lifted. And if StalkDaily or their representatives tried to hit my account hundreds or thousands of times using the old password, Twitter might keep the lock going for a very indefinite period.
What really sucks is I can’t raise a help ticket on Twitter support – as you need to login to do that.
So, what to do, what to do? No idea. I’m out with friends tonight, but will be checking back in from time to time. Meantime, if somebody wants to raise a ticket for me (account: @Sheamus) or send a message to @Twitter to have a look at this, that would be great.
Much obliged. And I’ll see you when I see you. Meantime, if you were hit by StalkDaily today and are able to access your Twitter account or locked out like me, please hit the comments. Thanks!

Yup, exactly the same thing happened to me. Oddly, I’m still logged in on the support site – I raised a ticket as soon as I saw the false tweet on my account, and I’ve raised another about the locked account. Not heard owt yet about either.
Twitter needs community management…
Cheers. Still locked out here. Let me know if you get any feedback or are unlocked? Thanks.
This happened to me before — same situation as yours. I had just changed my password and then ended up getting locked out of my account.
Turns out I had forgotten to update the password on a couple of the third-party Twitter apps that I was using. And these apps were, on an scheduled basis, repeatedly trying to log into my account. Since the apps still had the old password, the login attempts kept failing and they kept trying to get in.
So by the time I tried to log into my account via the website, I was already locked out, even though I hadn’t done anything yet.
Finally fixed the problem by going to each app and changing the passwords… then waited an hour or so. After that, I was able to login again.
Hope that helps you out in some way.
I’m locked out too! I’ll keep checking back on this post to see if there are any updates if anyone finds out anything…
I am also locked out of twitter after being hit w/stalkdaily and then changing my password. I’m frustrated! I was trying to keep people informed on the virus as well.
I think I got infected by clicking through to the profile page of someone else who was infected. I never clicked on stalkdaily’s twitter profile or went to their website. I got infected shortly after I clicked on someone’s profile on twitter.com that I thought was infected.
Let me know if the problem gets resolved or if there is something I can do to get my account unlocked.
Thanks!
@goodlaura
Good Laura, I think that was what happened with me as well. I believe I got it from TheDailyBlonde. I’m locked out now, and keep thinking I’ve never been addicted to Twitter, but right now I can’t live without it!
Locked out as well.

How I wish I’d read this before logging in to Twitter fifteen minutes ago. My profile page looked very strange so I logged straight out again. Am going to leave it for a while and check here for news. Thanks for spreading the information – hope all is well soon. Best, Elfie
Same thing happened to me, but I was able to log in on the tech site. I submitted a request (after changing the password on twitterfeed) and when I checked on the status a few minutes later it had been Solved, and I cold log in through the website. I still can’t log in through TweetDeck, though!
They give an email on the tech site in case you can’t log in to report a problem. Did you try using that?
Twitter (via @spam) says you can get back into your accounts by using the Password Reset.
@spam’s tweet:

Thanks Jillian. Gets me back in, at least; shame they keep locking me out again when I log back out.
If you’re locked out of your account, @twitter recommended that you did a password reset (AIUI the attack doesn’t change your e-mail address).
And whatever you do, don’t visit The Site With The Domain Name ‘StalkDaily’ And The TLD ‘.com’.
Thanks Jonathan. Got me back in, too. I figured that was an option yesterday but as I’d already contacted Twitter about the situation and wasn’t sure whether my account was being repeatedly hit by phishers I waited for a response.
Naturally, nothing came back overnight so I did the reset and all appears to be well.
I’ve updated this post. Thanks again.
Hello. My Twitter account has been going off and on constantly between being locked and unlocked. I looked into my timeline and there is nothing about StalkDaily that I ever posted. I have reset my password multiple times, but it only works temporarily. The only thing I can think of is that there is some Twitter client running that I don’t know about that keep trying to log into my account using an old password, but I don’t know of any. Is there any way to find out what client are trying to access your account? If so, it would make it much easier to diagnose the issue. Thanks for any help!
I think your best bet is to raise a support ticket with Twitter.
Alternatively, set-up a brand new, temporary account, and see if that suffers the same problems.
Good luck!
