you know, this is about the best description of policy I've read, and I totally agree. I follow people who are interesting, engaging and provide value in the form of entertainment, surprise, humor, and occasionally a passionate political argument (I love to argue politics, but if your comeback to my reason and documentation of facts is "you're stupid/brainwashed/socialist/marxist/nazi/clueless" - you lose, get off my feed). This was a great read, and like virtually everything else you find interesting enough to share, I've tweeted it out. Thanks for being so consistently awesome.

I completely agree with your policy and is the exact same that I follow. I remember being told when I joined Twitter that the difference between Facebook and Twitter is you are suppose to follow everyone that follows you. I always hated this policy because it is too noisy and annoying so I never adopted it. I know some do follow this policy and I guess it works for them. I think it is like you said a numbers game or because they are newbies.

Twitter can be many things to different people which is why a lot of new users don't understand it and give up. I think by adopting a policy this will give new users a guideline to follow.

Thanks for this intelligent post. I'm new to Twitter and trying to form my own policy. I only have a small following right now, I'm going to grow it slowly. I always feel a little guilty when someone starts following me and I don't automatically reciprocate. I try to check their profile. but honestly when I see they are following 10,000 people I can't imagine how they could possibly actually develop relationships unless they make a career out of it.

Still, how will I know if that persona following me is valuable or not unless I try? Perhaps I should try them and then edit. I'm about to edit someone out of my short list. I started following them as they had written a very interesting article, but they tweet A LOT about not much.
